The IFRC Unveils Comprehensive Climate Change Initiative

African Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, as well as IFRC and Climate Centre specialists, at a Climate Journey training

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched the full seven-stage climate action journey following successful trials by various National Societies. This climate action initiative commences with crucial enabling factors including institutional buy-in through the signing of the Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations, dedicated staffing, seed funding, heightened awareness, and the mobilization of youth and volunteers.

This endeavor aims to empower National Societies to enhance their understanding of evolving climate risks and impacts, thereby facilitating better preparedness for adaptation.

Last year, IFRC unveiled the initial three stages of the climate action plan: climate risk assessment, climate-smart screening, and climate-smart planning. Moreover, in the forthcoming months, the final four stages of the plan will be elaborated upon. These encompass the development of a multi-year climate strategy, community engagement on adaptation, the formulation of locally-led adaptation programs, and their subsequent implementation and evaluation.

Presently, many National Societies are proficient in climate-related preparedness, anticipatory actions, response, and recovery. Furthermore, the integration of climate-smart programs and operations into their long-term strategies aims to ensure that, at the very least, they do not exacerbate the risks posed by new climate extremes to vulnerable populations.
